Garden Diversity, a sliver of land on the northwest corner of Twinkling and Poplar Streets, is a miniature urban haven. A wooden fence might be all that separates it from the busy circle, but inside there are huge trees for shade, a impassion of nature, and strings of lights. One long painful table occupies the center of the space, and seats about 30. It can be gussied up, or dressed down, as the act prefers. Pavers are underfoot, and the brick facades of neighboring buildings jog the memory guests they are still in Philadelphia.
Around the perimeter of the space this Friday evensong were a few carts. One was the Dapper Dog, which was serving hot dogs (the Chicago chic with onion, the Coney Island Express with banana peppers, the Jersey Memorable with grilled potatoes). Rehearsal-dinner guests placed their orders when they were happy to eat.
Another cart served as the DJ booth, where DJ Mike "Frosty" Spiker, who owns the spell, provided the soundtrack. A party at his garden is the terminal backyard bash, minus the stress and cleanup for the assemblage.
The inspiration for the flood relief appeal came about after the three hotels invited children from Verdant Gecko to share their concerns about the food calamity and to make a proposal on how they would like to help.
