People in Eugene are habituated to to cheering for the Ducks.
On Saturday, hundreds turned out on a friendly October afternoon to root for ducks of a unconventional feather — uh, make that no feathers.
Remedy that 64,570 yellow rubber duckies bobbing along the Willamette River from the Autzen Footbridge to the DeFazio Bike Pass over in the Great Rotary Duck Race, a fundraiser staged each year by Rotary groups in Eugene, Springfield and Cot Grove.
Now in its 24th year, the all-volunteer event — and the largest sweepstakes in Oregon — raised $322,850 this year. The proceeds, which draw nigh from $5 raffle tickets, will be split among five municipal agencies that help strengthen families and avert child abuse.
Each rubber duck was banded with a number earlier in the week so prizes could be awarded to the holders of tickets tied to the first 17 ducks to mongrel the finish line.
