“I call to mind it was a very hot summer night. We were in the school committee elbow-room that was not air conditioned and we passed around a hat (my hat) and took donations. We had the first dive race on the river. What started out as a glorified sweeps has become the signature event for BEF,” Mr. Brenner said.
According to Deanna Donnelly, a co-chairperson for the occurrence, more than 1,000 tickets or ducks were sold this year, the most in the 20-year narrative of the event. First place winner of an iPad 2 was Daniel Reid; Libby Dolan was the transfer prize winner of $500; and Paul Redman took the third hold dear, a Kindle e-Reader.
The banks of Wood’s Pond, where the bed was held, were lined with children and adults in presentiment for the start of the race that went off a bit later than the scheduled 3 p.m. start space. In front of the Peck Center, adjacent to the pond, DJ Big Bill played tunes and kept the spirit light and festive.
