Building Kids Wagon - Building Sets and Models - Toys and Games

Children's story book about little kids running away from home and building forts.?

When I was barely (back in the very early 80s) my mom used to read a mystery to me which I loved. It was all about these little kids who got tired of their parents and well off up their wagons and left home. They built a wee village along the river with houses and everything. I loved that book but I don't keep in mind the title or author or anything. Anyone have any idea what it might be?
