Condign how tough was this past spring and summer for gardeners? It was so intractable, even master gardeners had problems.

"We all lost plants," said Betty Sims, a associate of the local master gardener group. "It was only just too hot and dry. This spring I planted tomatoes, chives and a few beans. They all burned up except my tomatoes.

"People said, 'We grew vegetables, but we didn't get vegetables.' "

Now that the temperature has dropped back into a more well-suited range, her tomato plants are beginning to manufacture fruit, thanks to a technique she began bothersome a little more than a year ago — raised beds.
