A carefully designed clubhouse – which to begin with cost 400 to build – has brought joy to ample numbers of yacht enthusiasts over the years and is now set to mark an eminent milestone.
The Aotea Sea Scouts building, first known as the Manukau Yacht and Motor Rowing-boat Club, will reach 100 years of age next weekend.
The building sits in loneliness on the edge of the Manukau Harbour and holds a lot of esteemed memories for locals.
"My great-grandfather was sailing boats here in 1903. We joined the billy in 1958 as kids. We used to live on Seacliffe Ave and there were boatsheds on the shore," Manukau Yacht and Motor Runabout Club president Keith Vazey recalls.
"This point used to be chocca full of kids and families in the belated 1950s and 1960s," Mr Vazey says of the bat.
"In the old days yachting was a big thing. If it hadn't been for the motorway we'd still be using it. A lot of actually good sailors came out of this club."
Aotea Sea Scouts commission member Grant Power has lived in the territory for 20 years and recalls his inlaws having their 50th nuptials anniversary at the building. It is still used by the Scouts and is sometimes hired out.
