“Mike is a sight. I envy his impeccable taste as a lover of pulchritude off the beaten path,” Karen said. “Christiane is an artist before a plotter. She’s a visionary, and her costumes look extraordinary onstage.” The trio’s longstanding relationship — they’ve discharge more than a decade taking creative risks together, onstage and off — is firm in tacit understanding and concrete trust. “The way I labour with Christiane and Mike is to mostly let them do what they want. It works A-one that way.”

Hultquist agreed: “One of the great things about working with Karen is that she trusts what I do. During this aim process, I felt like I was moving Karen into a more worldly-wise place, while the Virgens, in the way I dressed them, felt like younger versions of her, peradventure during her ‘Fever To Tell’ days.” For a month and a half — splitting lifetime between her Greenpoint, Brooklyn, studio and the venue seat at St. Ann’s Warehouse — Hultquist and her band made costumes for the all-female cast, which includes Karen, seven absolute Virgens, 33 chorus Virgens and two Sentinels (one of whom is the actress Lili Taylor). Among the conclusive looks are lotus glasses (with “3-D flowers coming out of the eyes”), a stuffed gold lobster scrabble and a massive spiky crown that tops Hultquist’s favorite costume of all: “a big, amorphous influence, like weird lungs.” This look, comprised of non-stop tiers of white ruffles, is the first of seven that Karen will put on.
