Halloween is coming quickly and like most Americans, it is one of my family’s favorite holidays. Tricks, treats, costumes and staying out time is exciting, no matter how old you are.
I was seven when my older sister lived in Hawaii with her Armada husband. She sent me a hula girl kit, complete with a little grass skirt, a coconut cartridge top, lei and a flower for my hair. I felt well done in my costume. Aunt Ruby took me to Ambrose Parkland in West Pittsburg to a Halloween party and garments contest. I didn’t win and blamed my aunt because she made me in a coat over the costume just because I was turning low-spirited. In hindsight, I guess a grass skirt and bikini top in October was a scant daring even for California.
With one foot in surrender and the other in winter, between abundance and scarcity, Halloween has become a code of festivity and superstition. Typically, historians imagine the holiday originated with an ancient Celtic extolling. Celts believed that the boundary between the worlds of the living and the unfeeling became distorted on October 31. They believed they would suffer up with ghosts when they left their homes. To keep from being recognized by these ghosts, people would don a fa after dark so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory chose November 1 as the day to honor all saints and martyrs. In 1000 A.D., November 2 became All Souls’ Day, which was a day to honor the unconcerned. All Souls Day, like the Celtic celebration, was also fêted with big bonfires, parades, and included dressing up in costumes as saints, angels and devils.
