Renee Richards and the Most Controversial Athletes in Sports History

In 2009, Caster Semenya, then an 18-year-old bit of skirt from a rural village in South Africa, rocketed to notoriety when she set a new record for the 800-meter sprint in the Africa Subordinate Championships, and then a month later, won a gold medal at the To the max Championships in Athletics in Berlin. But her drastic improvements aroused trace. Defeated rivals claimed she was a man and should be ineligible to hurry. Ms. Semenya didn't seem to mind. She was a winner–a diva in her country–and she had a long, promising life's work ahead of her. Rivals will be rivals.

But when the Ecumenical Association of Athletics Federation (I.A.A.F.) ordered testing, Ms. Semenya became an unwitting well-mannered rights icon. Enraged fans of the callow athlete, including South African President Jacob Zuma, demanded answers. Why was Semenya being singled out?

Was stock playing into it? Gender? According to a NY Times article ,  the I.A.A.F. has no stated rules for sex typing. The standards fend for oneself. Not wanting to end a stunning career on the rise, Ms. Semenya agreed to the testing. The I.A.A.F. called upon a brigade of medical experts, including a geneticist, an endocrinologist, a gynecologist, and a psychologist. The results of Ms. Semenya's tests were kept GI Joe, but the I.A.A.F. allowed her to continue competing.

Spartacus: Gods Of The Arena

The original SPARTACUS blur was something I saw in History class back in High School, which like most gladiator/Roman provisions at the time, didn't really distinguish itself from the get. GLADIATOR was a phenomenal update that ignited a fire inside me I hadn't felt in awhile. I was hoping HBO's ROME would further stimulate this fire but I couldn't really get into it. SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND not only fuelled this fire, it gave it enough power to sear the Earth itself as it soon became one of the best shows I've ever seen.

SPARTACUS: GODS OF THE ARENA didn't dissatisfy, but I had my doubts at first. After Andy Whitfield's stellar demeanour as Spartacus (not to mention the final episode "Put to death them all", the absolute best finale of a series bar none), I couldn't respite for the follow-up, SPARTACUS: VENGEANCE. The sad news of Andy's against
