THE Q: PROS Answer "Are American Comic Books SEXIST?"
28.09.11
I be averse to to be so negative, because I love comics, and I love superhero comics. But without a doubt, you hand most mainstream comics to a typical unfledged woman who hasn't grown up with this stuff or paid much heed, and she will think it's totally sexist to the point of being queer. It's a problem.
Mark Millar
This is just something the jocular industry periodically beats itself up over as a new wave of witty-book journalists replace the old and notice the same things for the first however. There's an element of truth to it, but no more than any other medium, to be honest. The thesaurus definition of sexism is discrimination because of gender or suggesting that characteristics in gender turn someone inferior and I don't really see this in comics. If anything, I think writers serve to be quite savvy and women are portrayed as the adults in most comics. This is general in movies and especially commercials, where they actively end a female demographic, and I can't think of a single model where I've seen a modern comic portraying women as less sharp or capable than male characters.
