There's a fill enough learning curve that I really advance to see a beginner with a machine that won't frustrate the daylights out of them, which the niggardly machines are very prone to do. I've literally had beginners in tears because the were so frustrated, so I invited them over so I could undefiled up their machines and try to figure out what was wrong. I'd put them to drudgery on one of my machines -- my grandmother's old Pasty straight stitcher, ca. 1950, a 1952 Chorister straight stitcher, or my 1990 Viking electronic -- and they were always amazed at how much easier sewing on the spur of the moment was. And though I could improve the cheapie machines with cleaning, oiling, new needles, etc., they were still balky machines liable to malfunction. Cut the frustration -- go for a all right machine, new or used, but don't go for cheapness.
