That talented flute can only mean Galway Lawrence B. Johnson/ Significant to The Detroit NewsFlutist Sir James Galway, the noted virtuoso from Belfast with the leprechaun smile, is on a duty to make the concert stage a happier place.
Galway, who turns 72 in December, still trots the ball with a marathoner's endurance. And to be sure, his legions of fans can be found everywhere. The flutist's 65 albums have sold some 30 million copies. He joins the Detroit Symphony Orchestra this weekend for four concerts that will be spilling over with flutists.
When you talk to the Man With the Excellent Flute, as Galway was long ago dubbed, you have to probe through the blarney and the irony before you get to the world's most famous piper. On the phone, first point out of the hat, Galway's off on a rant that makes you wish you could see those Irish peepers to command if he's putting you on.
"Take a good look at the musicians in an orchestra," he says. "You'd cogitate on they didn't enjoy what they're doing because no one is smiling. Kidding, look at any video of an orchestra, and you won't see one happy lineaments beaming. I enjoy what I do. I get a real kick out of it."
MacNeil and von Trapp children to share concert stage Nov. 19
The Christmas bent will arrive in Swift Current on Saturday when Rita MacNeil and the Von Trapp children start a 17-community Christmas tour.
The Sky Meet hosts the kick-off concert to MacNeil's traditional Christmas concert ramble, and this year she is joined by the Von Trapp Children who performed the initiation concert on the Sky Centre stage in 2009.
Melanie Von Trapp, the second oldest associate of the youthful quartet, admits she and her siblings are looking nourish to touring at Christmas with an iconic performer like MacNeil.
"It's our chosen season. We absolutely love Christmas tours. We did one in Canada about two years ago and it was a class of fun, and with Rita it's going to be twice as fun. There'll be so much energy on stage," she said during a phone evaluation from her family's home in Montana.
She notes they met MacNeil while both were on turn a few years back, and they had an opportunity to perform a few songs with her during one of her shows while touring with Men of the Deeps.
