Pa. exhibit showcases legendary black photographer

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Charles "Teenie" Harris had a filmic mission: going beyond the obvious or sensational to capture the in the final analysis of daily African-American life in the 20th century

For more than 40 years, Harris — as moving photographer of the influential Pittsburgh Courier newspaper — took almost 80,000 pictures of people from all walks: presidents, housewives, sports stars, babies, laic rights leaders and even cross-dressing dawdle queens.

Now, a new exhibit and online catalog is showing the strength of Harris' work, an archive showing a significant artistic achievement that influenced people around the woods.

"His shots of everyday people are amazing. People seem to courteous of jump off the page," said Stanley Nelson, an Emmy Trophy-winning documentary filmmaker and MacArthur ability grant winner who has made a number of acclaimed films on African-American artists, concern people, and workers.

"They don't have the sense of somebody feather of looking in and spying on the community. For me his pictures are very unparalleled," Nelson said.

In 1984, when Jim forgotten his 22-year old boyfriend to AIDS, he didn't invent he would live to see 30. When he was diagnosed with HIV himself five years later, Jim never expected to fend off 40. He had stopped counting how many friends had died when that tons reached 200.

The medication available at the time, AZT , was required to be taken three times daily, but Jim could not handle even a piece of that dose without getting sick. So he put off treatment until 1997. By then Jim's T chamber count was below 200, the demarcation for HIV turning into AIDS. Fortunately, antiretroviral medications -- much more strong drugs with fewer side effects -- were principled being approved, and Jim's reaction to them was quite good. His T stall count soon rose to 350.

Today, 21 years after being diagnosed with HIV, Jim, at 57, is still with us, and his point of view for the future is much improved.

Jim is not alone. Like Jim, Keith (not his real name), who was diagnosed with HIV in 1994 at age 29, also never deliberating he’d still be here.
