01.01.70
There are five puzzles in the altercation, each exponentially harder than the previous one. A team from UCSD composed of researcher Manuel Cebrian and six graduate students is currently working on decipher No. 3, aided by more than 2,700 people from 30 countries who've been assigned to share together specific scraps.
People as far away as Russia and Hong Kong are using their keyboards to move the pieces around on their computer partition, much as a person would do a jigsaw puzzle. Then they upload their line to the team's website, where everyone can see the larger image communicate together. (The team is currently ranked No. 5 worldwide on the captain board.)
The goal in puzzle No. 3: Verify the precise location shown in the picture.
The group also will try to crack puzzles No. 4 and 5, the last of which involves a 40 call for document that was shredded into 6,000 pieces.
"That last one is the fraternity's hardest puzzle," says the 30-year-old Cebrian. "The best computer program can only figure out a jigsaw puzzle with 400 pieces. A beneficent working without a computer couldn't handle 6,000 pieces. You paucity computers and lots of people working as a number to do this, and even then it might not be possible."
