Wurmfeld's 'Immersed in Color' Brings UT's Ewing Gallery to a New Level

First exhibited at 2008’s Edinburgh Holy day, the “E-Cyclorama,” like its ancestor, occupies an elevated space accessed by stairs. The viewer therefore stands within the travail, encompassed by the virtual reality of an almost 9-foot-unbelievable painting and all 675 square feet of its meticulously applied pigment. Although painted panoramas are nothing new, Wurmfeld’s two cycloramas (both years in the making) signal a critical departure from previous efforts in the same format.

When emerging into the “E-Cyclorama,” we upon to be centered within an area that references the classic color veer. Instead, we’re in elliptical space, the shape of which lends the artist’s 100-with an increment of hand-mixed paint colors a singular effect than they have in his “Cyclorama 2000.” Because Wurmfeld’s ellipse has a sustained axis with yellow at one end and violet at the other—whereas its short axis has halfway, grayscale-oriented colors—the shadow produce of colors facing one another across the shorter span serves to further step up the luminosity of the bright lemon yellow-orange and impenetrable blue-violet hues.

From hot to cool on the Richter scale

 Tate Up to the minute’s superb new retrospective exhibition of his effort, from student efforts in 1957 to the present day, allows us to assess his sizeable, apparently contradictory output and to judge whether the many charges laid against him are justified. It with dispatch becomes apparent, for example, that he simply doesn’t see any unconditional contradiction or opposition between abstraction and representation. It is by the skin of one's teeth not an issue for him. The opposition that clearly does enumerate for him, though, is that between hot and cold.

From the beginning he has avoided developing a signature dash in the sense of, say, Van Gogh or Lucian Freud. Rather he has regarded any category, from the personal to those denoted by great historical schools or movements, with analytical doubtfulness. This is crucial. For example, German Romanticism prioritises suspicion over thought. When Richter revisits the great German Libidinous painter Caspar David Friedrich, he takes away the heady emotionalism and tries to see what remains. When he turns to abstraction he cools down the tension of the Abstract Expressionists.
