Hampshire County Jail's labyrinth offers inmates 'tool of transformation'

NORTHAMPTON - OUT. A concept often dreamed of when one is serving prematurely. Getting out. Back to family, back to traffic, back to work - in some cases, back to the existence that landed one here in the first place. The pitfalls of parole.

A clique of men from the Life Skills program at the Hampshire Prison and House of Correction decided that getting "in" might be more noted in the long run than getting out. Inside, that is, deep secret - a private search of the soul brought on by the lucid act of walking, around and around.

And around and around.

A labyrinth was dedicated at the jail last week, an 80-by-80-foot fingerprint-like pathway of embedded stones and gravel. It went in on quod grounds at the far end of the exercise yard. It was built by 20 inmates - or clients, the provisos Sheriff Robert Garvey prefers. The motive was broken last spring.

It was the inmates who lobbied for the labyrinth, in details, badgered Garvey into letting them try it, and then toiled all summer and into the decline until a circular path was carved and stones laid into it.

Scariest haunted houses are right in your neighborhood

With their big-budget promotions and ubiquitous proximity, Busch Gardens' Howl-O-Scream and Unlimited's Halloween Horror Nights would seem to be the only game in town when it comes to scaring the pants off everyone with a haunted brothel and ghoulish creatures lurking about.

But more and more, scare zones are popping up at your neighbor's quarters, at fire stations and even in the woods. And we're not talking just a a handful of of skeletons and bats thrown up. In many cases, these about-grown haunted houses have elaborate themes, rational makeup and costumes, and whirring, scary props.

We've scouted out some of the more talked-about ones and tried to laundry list as many as possible. Here are some that caught our eye, both free and with paid entr (albeit much cheaper than a trip to a theme greens). And keep in mind that some of these are in actual neighborhoods, so be respectful and polished about where you park.

Radley Haunted Take in

Now in its sixth year documenting the travails of the lamentable Radley family, this year's haunted gratis focuses on poor Morton. As the story goes, Mort Radley inherited his grandfather's mortuary and a outr object: a camera that could wake the dead momentarily. It doesn't take foreshadowing to get a fix on out that things go horribly awry. This astonishingly true set of a moldering funeral home was built by Cody Meacham, 23, who will be assisted by cobber Jessie Savilla, 23, as well as others who will inhabit some of the rooms. Meacham, who works at Impress upon Shopping Network as a set builder, has created a slowly erection scenario that will have you looking over your shoulder from the very beginning. Be steady to watch the video (filmed in a sepia dull by friend Sean Malloy) that sets up the version, because you'll want to be prepared for what could happen inside the savage labyrinth. Moody music, dim lights and incredibly tough-minded props help create this theme estate-worthy experience. It's conveniently located off the 38th Avenue N take it on the lam at I-275, and a park across the street helps with the gush of people. But be sure to adhere to the warnings not to parking-lot on the grass. Meacham says 8 and up should be okay with the vehemence.
